Paris attacks - Why France will withstand the economic impact

The atrocities carried out in Paris have deeply affected a country still mourning for the dead and worried about the wounded. The impact on a way of life, on tourism and industries is also taking its toll in France. In the initial wake of the attacks stock markets slumped and the euro weakened.

Saxo Bank Economist Christopher Dembik, who's based in Paris, assesses the economic impact of the attacks and their aftermath and explains why national GDP will be resilient despite the shock.

With security budgets being boosted by up to EUR two billion, the fiscal implications could deepen the French deficit but Christopher argues that lawmakers and the European Commission are bound to be sympathetic towards budgetary stress being added to fund extra counter-terror measures.
