How to trade the holiday season

Whether it's Thanksgiving or Christmas and trading opportunities are thinner, what's a keen trader to do? Serge Berger, also known as the "Steady Trader", has some top tips. You need to pick your spots, he says, and prepare for the upcoming news flow.

With three weeks to go until Christmas, retailers will provide solid investments according to Serge, especially since Black Friday, America’s biggest shopping day, is just around the corner. He thinks traders should look at whether information flows match up with the technicals, and suggests looking at the likes of Walmart and Apple to see how they’re reacting to the news. If they’re holding up technically and the news is supportive, he says there’s a possibility they will continue to rally until the year-end.

After something like Black Friday it’s the online retailers' time to shine; it’s cyber Monday and in 2012, Cyber Monday spending totalled USD 1.456 billion, according to comScore, making it the single largest online spending day in history. As a result, Serge says it’s going to be "very interesting" for the retailers with a strong web-presence like Amazon.com and Bed, Bath and Beyond.
