How to trade over Christmas and New Year

When it comes to the festive season in December, trader Serge Berger says there are four things traders and investors have to look out for.

1. Not all Decembers are created equal. Look at where in December Christmas and New Year’s Eve fall; if it’s on a weekend we tend to have more volume but less so if they fall on a week day, like it does this year, because people take days off work around the festivities.

2. Less volume doesn’t mean less opportunity. In fact, there are several reasons for looking for uncrowded trades in stocks. Less volume can simply mean more opportunity.

3. Reduce your position size. This is because the market can be “jerky” so overall there’s chance that news can push the market around.

4. Enjoy the holidays! Allow yourself to take some time off. It’s a good time to take a few trades as they become available and enjoy the rest of the year.
