Why drones could take Facebook into orbit

Facebook is reported to be buying a drone company. At first the link between social media and solar powered drones may not make much sense, but if Facebook could deliver wifi to remote areas or underdeveloped countries then smartphone and computer use could boom.

Titan Aerospace is developing unmanned aerial vehicles which can fly at very high altitudes for long periods of time. The company produces aircraft which can reach atmospheric orbit, powered by solar cells, which are able to stay airborne for up to five years.  The firm is already focused on providing internet coverage in Africa with its Internet Africa Project.

Facebook’s not alone in thinking that unmanned aircraft could be a solution to providing wifi internet to almost half the world’s population currently without access. Google is also looking at using blimps or airships.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is involved with a project known as the Internet Initiative, a group of internet based firms looking at how best to extend global coverage. The Solara range of aircraft being developed by Titan also has a wider range of applications; including search and rescue, weather forecasting and pipeline monitoring.
