How long will euro's strength last?

The euro recently hit an eight month high against the dollar, but is it a matter of euro strength, or is it more to do with weakness in the dollar because of political tensions in the US?

Saxo Bank's Nick Beecroft says it's "interesting that the strength of the euro against the dollar is being increasingly mentioned in speeches by ECB council members". He thinks that if the euro reaches the 1.40 level, "you could see the ECB move into action".

The dollar slipped on Monday, over concerns the United States might default on its debt, as lawmakers struggled to reach a deal before this week's deadline.

Failure to break the stalemate before Thursday, the deadline to raise the debt ceiling, would leave the world's biggest economy unable to pay its bills in the coming weeks.
