Is Microsoft's tablet the right medicine?

Microsoft beat the Street with its latest profit and revenue figures. Its software is still prized. But with PC sales dramatically slowing, can its tablet strategy help it catch up with the likes of Apple and Google? The jury's still out.

The world’s largest software maker is undergoing unprecedented change. It's conducting its first-ever CEO search and started an organisational overhaul aimed at bolstering sales by focusing on tablet devices and services.

Informa Telecoms & Media, analyst Julian Jest, tells Saxo TV it is likely that Microsoft will be able to increase its market share in the tablet world via its corporate clients as they  look to replace ageing laptops with tablets. However, given its recent seven billion dollar deal to acquire Nokia earlier in the year, Microsoft will actually be responsible for two quite similar devices and something's going to have to give.

And this is a highly competative market. Apple has given Microsoft a taste of its own medicine by giving away its software to Mac users.  CCS Insight  analyst, Martin Garner tells us it'll take two or three years before we know who's gonig to be the real winner in this market.
