Apple Watch apps, Google's latest buy, Oculus Rift out in 2016

This week tech expert Stuart Miles takes a look at apps for the Apple watch, an interesting trend highlighted by Google’s acquisition of software maker Timeful, and the release of Facebook’s much talked about virtual reality device – Oculus Rift.
According to Miles, the apps available for the Apple Watch are really a mixed bag with car-service Über’s app working perfectly for the wrist-worn device while Facebook and Twitter disappoint.
Miles says Google’s acquisition of time management software developer Timeful highlights an interesting trend in tech deals that’s worth taking note off. Big companies like Google and Apple are buying up smaller firms, which can help them take their own software and platforms up a notch. This means there is money to be made from investing in smaller developers and not just in big new disruptive technologies.
After much hype a release date has finally been announced for Facebook’s virtual reality device – Oculus Rift. The headset will ship to consumers in the first quarter of 2016 with pre-orders later this year. However, no price has been announced yet, and Miles wonders whether it makes business sense to miss out on the all-important Christmas sales.
